After a long train journey from Germany to Poland we arrived in Krakow early evening.

We explored a little on Friday morning and enjoyed the magnificent castle , town square and heard the famous bugle call.
On Friday afternoon we headed off on quite a long mini-bus journey to Auschwitz, the whole experience leaving us with sobering and very mixed emotions.
Returning late to Krakow we searched out a little place to eat in the Jewish quarter and enjoyed our first experience of pierogi; warm flavoursome and fabulously yummy!
Saturday morning, we headed off to the salt mines at Wieliczka, James loved every minute of being underground and tasting the salt-lined walls of the mine. The tour was wonderfully informative but only if you kept up with the guide, truly a non-stop experience.

So much to see from carved chaples, underground lakes, massive caverns that had taken years to excavate, to a fully functional ballroom. The miners had left works of art throughout in the form of statues all carved into the rock salt.
Back on the surface we returned once more to Krakow, more pierogi before our early evening departure to Warsaw.

Europe sure knows how to do a magnificent castle. As a 3 unit modern history student of a long time ago I am enjoying the commentary on the war history.
I need a map to trace your journeys! Hungary then Germany then Poland!
Krakow sounds wonderful! X
