Ribe Denmark

Plans to travel to Berlin scuppered by a 50-hour German rail strike (called off at the last minute) forced us to re-think the next destination.  After some checking of the map and searching for accommodation, we found ourselves heading to the west of Denmark and to Ribe, the oldest town in Scandinavia.

It’s a pretty place with lots of quaint buildings and plenty of history.  The church has records dating back to the 900’s and has some interesting paintings and artefacts.

The host of our Airbnb welcomed us to a small house in the very centre of Ribe, with its own history.

A cosy place, full of character and comfort; a welcome change from the hotels.  He also offered to take us on a guided tour of the nearby chamber lock and the Wadden Sea which we enjoyed.

James was enthralled by the idea of the first Viking longboats  making their way down the river network to the open sea, their marauding crews set on the pillage of distant lands.

We spent the rest of the day following the local nature trail and reading about the wildlife.

It made a relaxing change from the city-hopping.

Ohh! I love Ribe...quaint & pretty was my exact description 😃 before I continued to read on. It has a fairytale look about it...enchanting... the church looks beautiful..though not so the sky!! Looks like a storm was brewing....but I'm sure your accommodation was a lovely change and looks very welcoming and cosy.....though Ribe was not an original destination it certainly seems to have been a worthy choice with a long and interesting history....the vikings and their long ships would certainly have been a sight to see...incredible sailors & explorers back then...shame about the plundering...but their ship-building was an amazing skill.. sounds like a thumbs up for Ribe..😁 hope the next leg of your journey is strike free.
